INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE RIEDERER BOUTIQUES
MARSEILLE-PRADO, AIX-EN-PROVENCE, GARDANNE | FRANCE
Maison Riederer, founded in 1780 and recently acquired in 2015, by Benjamin Simonian. By retaining Riederer’s world famous pastry chef Emmanuel Schlick, with Riederer since 1991, Riederer has preserved the craftsmanship of the families’ centuries old secret recipes, sweets and, all of the brand's unique pastries.
In the design brief, Mr. Simonian wanted a more modern “En Vogue” vision for the historic patisserie shop. Going hand-in-hand with a modern vision, he wanted the world to know that each delicacy was a “purpose-made work of edible art”.
Lisa designed the entire concept, branding, construction schedule, municipal approvals and, tendering processes which rolled-out with 3 “Concept” shops: the first shop was in Marseille on the chic Ave du Mazargues, the second shop was in the centre of Aix-en-Provence opposite the Mayoral offices and, the third was located beneath the Riederer factory and laboratory, just outside of Aix-en-Provence.
The designs were a play between “white-on-white” and the shadowed textured walls, with each of the small delicacies as the focal point within each boutique. The soft balance between the textures and the white-on-white shadows gave the visitor a view of each pastry which allowed for nothing to detract from their exquisite uniqueness.
Each taste explosion was to be displayed in elegant high-gloss lacquered timber & glass cabinets, as if to display rare jewels.
The boutiques were designed to make the guest feel as if they were inside a luxury chocolate box.
The walls with their soft and undulating patterns, extending away from the hard internal space, make the visitor feel wrapped in a sumptuousness not found outside of Paris.
